The running martingale helps give you, the rider, extra control over your horse’s head position by discouraging your horse from lifting its head too high by applying downward pressure on the mouth through the bit and reins. Many riders like to use the running martingale when jumping as it provides an additional support to the rider with the neck strap.
The running martingale is acceptable in jumping and cross country but is not allowed in dressage and flat showing classes.
